APA Guide: Three to Seven Authors-Journal

Guidelines

Please Note:  Rules for citing multiple authors are the same for all resources (books, periodicals, websites, etc.)

References: An entry that appears at the end of your paper.

Author Last Name, First Initial. Second Initial., Author Last Name, First Initial. Second Initial., Author Last Name, First Initial. Second Initial., Author Last Name, First Initial. Second Initial., Author Last Name, First Initial. Second Initial., & Author Last Name, First Initial. Second Initial. (Year). Article title: Subtitle. Journal Title, Volume(issue), page range.

In-Text Citation (Paraphrase): An entry that appears in the body of your paper when you express the ideas of a researcher or author using your own words.  For more tips on paraphrasing check out The OWL at Purdue.

(Author Last Name, Author Last Name, Author Last Name, Author Last Name, Author Last Name, & Author Last Name, Year).

NOTE: Although the first in-text citation for a work with three to five authors/editors includes all of the names of the authors/editors, subsequent citations include only the first author's/editor's last name, followed by et al. and the year.

In-Text Citation (Quotation): An entry that appears in the body of your paper after a direct quote.

(Author Last Name, Author Last Name, Author Last Name, Author Last Name, Author Last Name, & Author Last Name, Year, page number).

3 to 5 Authors

References:

In-Text Citation (Paraphrase):

For 3 to 5 authors cite all author names the 1st time:

Westhues, Lafrance, and Schmidt (2001) believed... 

(Westhues, Lafrance, & Schmidt, 2001)

After the 1st citation for 3 to 5 authors use the 1st author's name and "et al." :

(Westhues et al., 2001)

 

In-Text Citation (Quotation):

(Westhues, Lafrance, & Schmidt, 2001, p. 40)

(Westhues et al., 2001, p. 40)

Up to 7 Authors

List all author names up to to 7:

Dietz, P. M., Williams, S. B., Callaghan, W. M., Bachman, D. J., Whitlock, E. P., Westhues, A., & Hornbrook, M. C. (2007). Clinically identified maternal depressionbefore, during, and after pregnancies ending in live births. American Journal of Psychiatry, 164(10), 1515-1520.

8 or More Authors

List the first six (6) authors, then use the ellipsis [...], and give the last author's name:

Braun, P. A., Lind, K. E., Batliner, T., Brega, A. G., Henderson, W. G., Nadeau, K., . . . Albino, J. (2014). Caregiver reported oral health-related quality of life in young american indian children. After the 1st citation for 7 or more authors use the 1st author's name and "et al." :

Dietz et al. (2009) also supported...
