APA Guide: Citing Books

Cite what you actually use

  • If you only use a specific chapter in a book, cite that chapter specifically

            O'Neil, J. M., & Egan, J. (1992). Men's and women's gender role journeys: A metaphor for healing, transition, and transformation. In B. R. Wainrib (Ed.),

                     Gender issues across the life cycle (pp. 107-123). New York, NY: Springer.

            Citation Source:  https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/08/ [not part of citation example above!]


  • If you use the entire book, meaning you cite from many chapters or throughout the book, you can cite the entire book in your "References".

               But give the page number or numbers for your quote or paraphrase in your in-text citation.


            She stated, "Postive mental attitude is essential to passing state board exams" (Davis, 2013, p. 202), and offered many examples as to why.
