What are the Boards?

The State of Florida Department of Health ensures quality healthcare by requiring over 200 fields to be licensed, in over 40 healthcare professions. In order to be a nurse, you must pass the NCLEX (different tests for PN and RN).

Preparing for the NCLEX:

1. Take the test as soon after your coursework as possible. To facilitate that, register for accounts with the Florida State Department of Health and Pearson Vue early your last term, and you'll be ready to move forward at the end of your program.

2. Attend any review sessions offered at the school.

3. Study! Utilize some of the excellent online educational resources, books, videos, podcasts, and apps.

How to Register for the NCLEX

  1. Graduate. Your name, along with the other graduates, will be submitted to the Florida Board of Nursing by our Dean of Nursing.
  2. Get gift card. Talk to Cindy in the nursing department. 
  3. Register with Florida Board of Nursing. Submit application with the appropriate fees ($110) to the Board of Nursing.
    1. Go to http://floridasnursing.gov/licensing/
    2. Choose the appropriate option under "choose a profession or program"
    3. If you have an account or hold a Florida nursing license, log in with your current credentials; if you are new to the Board of Nursing, register, and you will receive an email to confirm your account.
    4. Once logged in, select the drop-down bar located under MY APPLICATION
    5. Select NURSING
    6. A new drop-down bar will appear
    7. Select LPN or RN Exam Application
    8. Submit and follow prompts.
    9. Important note: when entering in your PRACTICE ADDRESS, if you are not currently working under a different licensure (i.e. CNA, LPN), select the button NOT PRACTICING. Why? This address will be made public record.
  4. Register with NCSBN / Pearson VUE. Begin registration with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and the testing vendor and pay fees with gift card ($200)
    1. Go to http://www.pearsonvue.com/nclex/
    2. Sign-in or register to create a new account
    3. When selecting the school, USE THE CODE for our school. Do not enter Country, State, City, Zip. ENTER ONLY THE CODE
      1. RN: US70700900
      2. PN: US70100900
  5. Fingerprinting. You are required to complete electronic fingerprinting at your own expense (approximately $80). The board will not clear you to test until this is completed.
    1. Go to http://flhealthsource.gov/background-screening/
    2. Locate a provider at: http://flhealthsource.gov/bgs-providers Choose a site that is PHOTO ENABLED
    3. Register and make an appointment with the fingerprinting site. You will need the ORI number from the DOH: EDOH2550Z
    4. It could take up to 72 hours to process.
  6. Wait. Once all materials are submitted, an application specialist will review them. It may be necessary for the application specialist to request additional information.
  7. Receive your ATT. If eligibility requirements are met, you will receive a letter or email with instructions regarding registration with Pearson VUE. Approval is transferred to Pearson VUE. This is your Authorization To Test (ATT). You will have 90 days to register for the test.
  8. Register for the NCLEX at http://www.pearsonvue.com/nclex/ There are test sites at Plantation, Pembroke Pines, Orlando, Miami, and Port Charlotte, Florida.
  9. Take the exam. Call Fortis and update us. Upon passing the licensure examination the initial license is issued within 7-10 days.
  10. Sleep.


Applicants who do not successfully pass their examination will have to submit a re-examination application. After three failures of the same level of examination (RN, LPN), regardless of jurisdiction, the applicant must successfully complete a Florida Board of Nursing approved remedial training program. The program includes classroom and clinical components and proof of completion must be submitted at the time of application for the fourth attempt.
