Centerville: Student Resources

Website for Fortis College, Centerville Library & Resource Center

General Tips

  1. Study in a place that is quiet and free from distractions.
  2. Make sure you are not hungry, tired, tense or in any other state of mind that will reduce your concentration.  Clear your mind and relax.
  3. Take breaks as needed whenever you feel overwhelmed or fatigued.
  4. Do not try to study too much at one time.  Break larger tasks into smaller sub-tasks to make it more manageable.
  5. Study at a time of day that works best for you whether it be early morning, afternoon or late at night.
  6. Make a schedule and/or outline of what you want to study to help provide structure and keep on track.
  7. Study with friends or classmates as another person may be able to help in the understanding of a difficult concept.
  8. Reward yourself for studying.

  1. Keep related notes in one place, such as a single notebook for a class.
  2. Rewrite notes after class to reinforce what you have learned and make them easier to reference later.
  3. Review class notes for at least 30 minutes each night.
  4. Skim through the previous day's notes prior to class.
  5. Use different colors to separate different concepts.
  6. Use notes to create outlines and/or study guides.

Flash Cards

  1. Do not put too much on the card as it can become overwhelming.
  2. Use pictures when applicable.
  3. Keep related concepts together to help link them.
  4. Give examples of a vocabulary word and not just the definition.
